Rhode Island Chapter Outings

About the Outings

Once a month, the Rhode Island Sierra Club puts together a local, family friendly, and fun filled outing to the great outdoors. On these day trips, activities can include hiking in the state's beautiful parks, picnicking in historic town centers, and kayaking on the pristine watersheds around the Narragansett Bay. Please join us for one of these upcoming adventures. See you there!

Outings are open to club members, guests, & anyone else interested in getting outside.

We suggest a $3 members/$5 nonmenbers donation to help support the RI Sierra Club outings. Please contact Outings Leader Ben Jones with any questions or suggestions (outings@risierraclub.org or 401-598-6639).

Upcoming Outings:

Saturday, May 26, 2012 - Vernal Pools in the Great Swamp

  • Vernal pools are seasonal ponds that develop during the wet months of spring. They are fragile and important habitat for many animals including frogs and salamanders. See them while they last by joining the RI Sierra Club on this outing.
  • Meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 12pm to caravan or at 1pm at the Great Swamp at the end of Great Neck road in W. Kingston. Plan to be home at 6pm.

Saturday, June 30, 2012 - Lincoln Woods Hike and Eco BBQ

  • Join the Outings club on a hike through the surprisingly diverse Lincoln Woods Park. After the hike, the RI Chapter will be having their annual Eco BBQ where we will enjoy a potluck style meal centering around local and seasonal food. It is a good way to get involved with the club or just make some new friends. All are welcome.
  • Meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 11:15am to caravan or at 11:30am at Lincoln Woods. We will hike until about 1pm when the BBQ starts at site #35 (near the lake).

July, 2012 - Snorkling and Kayaking the Ninigret Salt Marsh

  • While everyone else in Ninigret Park is headed for the beach, the RI Sierra Club will be headed for the salt ponds to do some Grade A snorkling and kayaking. The salt marsh is relatively tranquil and has a low amount of suspended particles in the water, which means great underwater views.
  • We will be heading out early from the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) to beat the crowds to the popular park and its small parking area. The lot is a pay lot, so we can save money by caravaning and all pitching in.
